Gate Gourmet Announces Details of Voluntary Redundancy Programme

Gate Gourmet London has announced the details of the non-binding voluntary redundancy programme it has offered to employees as well as the compensation payment offered to those workers who were dismissed on August 10 following their participation in an illegal wildcat strike. Employees and dismissed workers received those details in individual letters from the company, which were sent out on Friday.

The voluntary redundancy plan calls for a payment of two times weekly pay (uncapped) for each completed year of service - more than twice the statutory level for redundancy pay. The company, at its discretion, may accept or decline these requests for redundancy. It is Gate Gourmet London's hope that the results of this voluntary programme and compensation payment plan, coupled with a possible compulsory programme and work rule changes, will reduce its workforce to levels agreed upon by the union which will restore the company to economic viability.

Eric Born, Managing Director of Gate Gourmet London, said: "This programme enables us to provide for an enhanced compensation package, along the lines of a voluntary redundancy package. We are making it available not only to our 1,400 loyal current staff, but also to those former employees who chose to engage in an illegal wildcat action rather than within the bounds of the law. Although this wildcat action was inappropriately instigated by militant factions along with a large number of hard-core followers in an attempt to severely hurt Gate Gourmet London, we are committed to working with the union to find a reasonable compromise even for the dismissed employees."
