In the U.S., Gate Gourmet has a long-term relationship with Amtrak, the country's passenger rail service provider, dating back to 1999. The two companies refined a plan in early 2006 to monitor catering operations, perform administrative functions, provide the necessary labor at the commissary level, and enjoy savings in the cost of food, supplies and distribution.
To increase benefits to both parties, Gate Gourmet proposed an end-to-end management service, consisting of three basic initiatives:
In addition to these changes, Amtrak introduced a new simplified dining service to target substantial losses on certain long-distance trains. The new service features fully prepared meals that require minimal on-board preparation. This means less cooking and meal preparation, translating to reduced costs of operations.
As with any customer of Gate Gourmet, it is imperative that we have no missing items, delays, accidents or equipment damage to ensure customer satisfaction and adherence to strict budgetary requirements.
It doesn't stop there. We are in constant discussion with Amtrak for better ways to conduct business and improve our joint efficiency, in order to maintain our win-win enterprise. To date, these have included the consolidation of multiple distribution channels; supplier and product rationalization and consolidation; streamlined deliveries and optimization of on-hand inventories; implementation of an integrated tendering process; introduction of alternative specifications; and an increase in outside sponsorship and branding opportunities.
Gate Gourmet provides service for all Long Distance, Regional, Metroliner, High Speed Premier ACELA (First Class and Café) trains, as well as the famous "Auto Train," using Amtrak's 13 facilities in 10 locations throughout the U.S.
